VETERANS AND THE CHECKERED FLAG
Thirteen medically discharged veterans travel to Wales to participate in an international motorsports event, where they pursue victory, community and recovery.
MOVIE TRAILER:
We recently had the amazing opportunity to visit Ireland and Wales alongside an organization called Operation Motorsport - a not-for-profit that helps veterans who have been medically discharged to acclimate to civilian life through the use of professional race teams. They find veterans placements in existing race car Pit Crews because the lifestyle is somewhat similar to military life, and in the process provide the opportunity to work for a season and develop new skills and relationships.
While in Wales, they took part in The Race of Remembrance - a 12 hour endurance race with teams representing a variety of military branches and veterans groups in the UK. Thirteen Veterans traveled to Wales to take part in the race becoming their own race team for the first time. Team OpMo had two cars, one for the US and one for Canada, and was the only team representing North America.
Chris and I have long been supporters of service members and veterans, and have always appreciated military movies and history. We're also strong advocates for mental health support, and would like to see increased understanding, transparency and acceptance of expressing challenges as well as seeking help. We expected the trip to be exciting, cool, and moving - and we weren't wrong. It was all of those things. But it was also profound in a way we weren't prepared for. We knew we'd be meeting all kinds of interesting people, but weren't anticipating the honesty, dedication, and courage these amazing people exhibited while sharing their stories and experiences with the hopes of helping others.
It quickly became clear to us that what we were capturing deserved a wider audience than we had originally imagined.
And so for the last 8 months we've continued travelling and working with some of the bravest people we've ever met to showcase their journey and highlight a truly outstanding organization built on the shoulders of heroes. We've been travelling from Nevada to West Virginia, Maryland, and DC - from Toronto to Ottawa, Petawawa, and Oshawa to do our very best to do justice to these individuals, and do right by their stories.
This project is incredibly personal to everyone involved and it's a cause we believe wholeheartedly. We hope it can make a difference. We hope that it gets seen and that someone, somewhere finds hope, or opportunity where before they saw none. We hope it encourages conversation, highlights where we can do better, and above all honours the men and women who sacrifice so much for our nations.
Thank you for watching our movie - we truly hope you enjoyed it!
